Temples:
Goa has explicit and aesthetic temples. a number of temples with histories
daring back to as early as the thirteenth century A.D., are found all over Goa.
Imposing lamp towers in front
of every temple in a unique feature of temples in Goa. Among the
prominent ones are The Shiva Temple of Shri Manguesh at Mangueshi, Shri
Mahalsa Temple at Mardol, Of which the lamp tower is made entirely of brass
unlike other temples, Shri Ramnath and Shri Nagesh temples near Ponda, and
Shri Shantadurga temple in Kevlem.
Brahma Temple : 7 km from Valpoi, in the village of Carambolim.
This shrine belong to the 5th century A.D. It is one of the few temples
dedicated to Lord Brahma found in India.
Shri Chandranath:
It is suited on the top of 350 meters high hill of Chandranath at Paroda,
Quepem. Chandreshwar was the titular deity of Bhoja kings who ruled South
Goa before the Christian era till the middle of 8th century. They had
named this capital Chandrapur after their deity. Shivalinga is carved out
from the rock which oozes water whenever rays of moon fall on it.
The temple is so designed that Linga receives a moon light on every full
moon. The temple commands a panoramic view and its surroundings are
enchanting. The temple's ancient chariot is well known for its wood
carvings.
Shri Damodar :
(22 km from Margao at Zambaulim -- Sanguem). Situated in the picturesque
surrounding on the bank of the Kushavati river popularly known as Panti, near
the temple, the river is regarded particularly holy and is said to have medical
properties.
The deity is worshipped by the Hindu and the
Christians alike. A week-long celebration of Shigmo is packed with programmes
which include a colorful fair, exchange of GULAL (echro) collective meals and
presentation of shows on popular legends and folk culture. The deity was
originally in Margao.
Temple of Shri Mahadeva at Tambdi Surla : In Sanguem Taluka at the foot of
the Ghats, is the only specimen of Kadamba-Yadava architecture (13th
century) in basalt stone preserved and available in Goa. A motor able road connects Sancordem to this temple complex.
Shri Mahalaxmi : Situated in the village of Bandode, about 4 km from Ponda.
It is considered the abode of the shakti cult. The Sabhamandap has
a gallery of 18 images, out of 24 images of emanatory aspects of Bhagvata
sect, which is considered one of the rare galleries of wooden images of
Vishnu in India. The image of Mahalakshmi has a close resemblance to
that of Mahalakshmi at Kolhapur, The main center of worship. Her special feature is that she wears a linga on her head, and is considered a
peaceful or satvika form of Devi. The Goddess Mahalakshmi was
worshipped by the Shilahara rulers (750--1030 A.D.) and the early Kadamba
Kings of Goa.
Shri Mahalsa : At
Mardol. One km from Shri Manguesh temple. The deity worshipped is an attribute of Vishnu (Mohini
, during the fight between Dewas and Asuras, according to hindu mythology). Main Festivals :Zatra
(February) and Navaratra.
Shri Ramnath :
33 km in Ponda Taluka. Besides the shrine of the main Ramnath Deity it
has four small temples of Shri Laxminarayan, Shri Shantadurga (Sateri), Shri
Betal and Shri Sidhanath . The five together, Constitute Shri Ramnath
Panchayatan. The legend in Mythology says that Rameshwar is the original
abode of Lord Ramnath.
Shri Sapta
Koteshwar: (37 km from Panjim) At Narve-Bicholim was a favoured deity of
the Kadamba Kings. Its original temple was suited in the island of Diwadi.
It was destroyed by the Portuguese and the idol was shifted to its present site
at Narve (Bicholim). Many years after wards in 1668 A.D. Chhatrapati
Shivaji ordered renovation of this temple at the present site during his campaigns
to oust the Portuguese. The linga worshipped in this temple is having
facets and is known as "DHARALINGA".
Shri Mallikarjuna : ( 40 km from Margao,
at Canacona). The southernmost taluka of Goa is believed to have been
constructed during the middle of 16th century by ancestors of the
Kshatriya Samaj. It was renovated in the year,1778. The temple has
massive wooden pillars with intricate carvings There are 60 deities
around the temple. Rathasaptami in Febrauary and Shigmotsava in
April are the main festivals which draw large crowds.
