The European Renaissance, ironically, left its most
indelible impression in the Asian continent-- on the fringes of the
western coast in India.
Every moment in the languid life, pulsating
festival throbbing with gaiety, Evokes the Mediterranean in speech and sound,
grace and vibrancy in folklore and customs that have flowered bountifully,
even under the blazing suns of the orient.
After the streets are cleared
of the streamers and confetti of the Carnival, and King Memo retires for one
year, the fifth Sunday in lent is celebrated by the Friars of the Franciscan
Third order with a colorful procession in Old Goa with more that 40 statues of
saints.
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated all over Goa. Diwali is equally celebrated with zest between October and November even
though they have barely had time to rest from Dussehra (Between September and

Almost suddenly it is December and it is time to prepare for Christmas after
December 3,of course, the Feast day of Saint Francis Xavier, which is
celebrated with great pomp at the Bomb Jesus Basilica.
Feast days are an excuse for more merriment --music and dancing at a village
fair always held on the occasion. The Feast Day dedicated to Our Lady is
December 8, and February 2, The following year after Reis Mogos, The fate
for the Three Kings, which is celebrated on Epiphany, January 6th.
Christmas celebration starts with Novenas (prayers lasting
over a week to 10 days) and sermons; with a band in attendance, 'confrarias',
or group of people worshiping the same saint, wear a distinctive
vestment and carry the saint's 'cirias', or standards; the assortment of
vestments and standards create a colorfully impressive spectacle. A fiesta
fair is full of fun fireworks and fantasy, is followed by a concluding Mass,
be it in a humble village church or splendid cathedral. The Christmas High
Mass in the Bom Jesus Basilica is preceded by the singing of the salves; in
the early hours of the morning the majestic Christmas strains of
"Gloria in Excelcis
Deo" fill the church as the infant Jesus is placed in his crib.
